Frequently asked questions

What is a JSON diff?

A JSON diff shows the differences between two JSON documents, highlighting added, removed, and changed values.

How do I compare two JSON files?

Paste each JSON into the two input panels and click Compare. Differences are highlighted automatically.

What do the colors mean in JSON diff?

Green indicates additions, red indicates deletions, and yellow/orange indicates modified values.

Can I compare large JSON files?

Files up to 2 MB work well. Larger files may be slow; files over 10 MB are not supported.

JSON diff vs XML diff — what is the difference?

JSON diff compares key-value structures natively, while XML diff must account for element order and attributes differently.

Is this tool free?

Yes. JSON Toolbox is completely free with no sign-up, no usage limits, and no hidden fees.

Is my JSON data safe? Is it uploaded to a server?

Your data never leaves your browser. All parsing, formatting, and conversion runs locally on your device — nothing is sent to any server.

Which browsers are supported?

All modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. No plugins or extensions required.

What is the maximum file size?

Files over 2 MB may feel slow; files over 10 MB are blocked. For very large payloads, use a local CLI tool instead.

Does it support JSON5, comments, or trailing commas?

Only standard JSON (RFC 8259) is supported. JSON5 features like comments and trailing commas are not accepted.
