JSON vs YAML: differences and when to convert

JSON and YAML both represent structured data, but they differ in readability, strictness, and ecosystem support. Picking the right format — and converting safely when needed — saves time in development, ops, and API integration.

Key differences

  • JSON: strict syntax, double-quoted keys, no comments — great for parsers and wire formats
  • YAML: indentation-based, supports comments — easier for hand-written configs
  • JSON is a subset of YAML 1.2; most valid JSON parses as YAML
  • YAML-only features (anchors, multiline strings) may be lost or need special handling when converting to JSON

When to use which

  • REST API requests/responses: prefer JSON
  • Kubernetes manifests, Docker Compose, CI configs: usually YAML
  • Frontend tooling (package.json, tsconfig.json): JSON
  • Large configs edited by humans often: YAML

Conversion tips

YAML → JSON: watch boolean true/false and null. JSON → YAML: long strings and special characters may need quoting. Always validate syntax after conversion and smoke-test in the target environment.
